Secure Browser “Browser in the Box“ now available for free
Surfing the web has become an absolutely necessary tool in today’s work environments. Originally simple browsers have meanwhile become powerful and complex software applications. Despite ever renewed security mechanisms they are considered to be the main gateway for malicious code of any nature.
The “Browser-in-the-Box” concept fights all such threats efficiently. A virtual machine is provided with a reduced operating system and a web browser encapsulated therein. Malware can’t thus penetrate the host operating system and a potential damage in the separated virtual machine will vanish with each start of the browser by returning to a certified starting point. This solution allows users to surf the Internet with confidence even when using most modern and comfortable web technologies without limitation despite otherwise usual advice.
The "Browser in the Box" solution as developed and evaluated under the supervision of the Federal Office for Information Security is now available as a free-of-cost single user application to all authorities and regular customers alike. For the professional user in centrally managed IT environments an enterprise version is in final stage of development. This version will provide to main additional features:
Central deployment and corporate-wide configurability of security policies.
Secure tunneling of all Internet traffic between the "Browser in the Box"-browser and an Internet gateway. The client’s main operating system will have no access to the Internet whatsoever. Hence, an efficient separation between the internal corporate network and the Internet becomes enforceable.
